Why We Should Stop Pre-emptive Medication of Livestock

1. According to David Love, project director of Johns Hopkins’ Center for a Livable Future, healthy animals who consume too high an antibiotic dose from food can become ill or even die.
2. Links between antibiotic overuse on factory farms and antibiotic resistance in people
3. Continued exposure in animals to antimicrobials can cause resistant bacteria in fecal matter on farms.
4. Sick animals aren’t going to be the ones most aggressively pushing for food, therefore, missing out on treatment (that healthy animals eat).

Thumbs up to U.S. Rep Louise Slaughter for reintroducing the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (HR 965), legislation to curb the use of medically important antibiotics on factory farms.
